“We’re just very inconsistent”: Astralis’ struggles deepen ahead of critical MRQ

Astralis, once the undisputed benchmark in professional Counter-Strike, continues to search for stability following a disappointing showing at the PGL Bucharest Swiss stage. What began as a promising campaign with a victory over FaZe quickly unraveled with losses to 3DMAX and Apogee, before Virtus.pro sealed the Danish squad’s early exit.

In the aftermath, captain Casper “cadiaN” Møller offered an unfiltered look into the team’s ongoing issues, emphasizing inconsistency. These internal challenges now cast a long shadow over the team’s chances at the upcoming BLAST.tv Austin Major Europe Regional Qualifier.

From Cluj triumph to Bucharest collapse

The sharp contrast between Astralis’ performance at PGL Cluj-Napoca and their recent outing in Bucharest is hard to ignore. In Cluj, the team delivered a statement performance, securing a top-three finish and reasserting its place among the game’s elite. That momentum, however, did not carry forward. A swift loss to Vitality at BLAST Lisbon followed, and in Bucharest, they failed to build on their early win against FaZe.

CadiaN reflected on this falloff candidly in an interview with HLTV after the loss to Virtus.pro.

We’re just very inconsistent in terms of being on the same page with the game plan, decision-making, and communication.

He noted that the team can rise to the level of top-tier opponents but remains vulnerable to unexpected defeats, particularly against underdogs who play with sharp focus and strong fundamentals.

Underdogs rise, Astralis stumble

While the loss to Virtus.pro may be understandable given their recent form, dropping a map to Apogee raised eyebrows. Apogee, a team ranked considerably lower, exploited Astralis’ lack of cohesion. The defeat highlighted a recurring theme: Astralis is struggling with adaptability and reactive gameplay.

CadiaN addressed this issue in context:

We can beat some great teams, but we can also lose to some underdogs. We’re trying daily and weekly to adjust these things and fix these things, but it’s also not something that happens overnight.

This recognition of the problem is vital, but the clock is ticking. With the team having been together for six months, fans and analysts alike are beginning to question whether this lineup has already hit its ceiling.

Final Words Before the MRQ

With reputational capital eroding and tournament exits piling up, the MRQ has become more than just a qualification opportunity. It is a proving ground for whether this Astralis lineup can reclaim competitive credibility or whether deeper organizational change is inevitable.

Speaking on the importance of the MRQ, Cadian replied.

It’s probably pretty important.

The Danish in-game leader is one of the players facing the most criticism after Astralis’ start to 2025. In Bucharest, the Astralis captain was the 10th worst player in terms of stats with a 0.84 rating after 13 maps.

The European qualifier for the BLAST.tv Austin Major kicks off on Monday. Astralis will face OG in the first round, where six out of 16 teams qualify.
